James William Tyrrell was born in 1863. He graduated from the University of Toronto with an engineering degree and qualified as a land surveyor. After serving as hyrdographer on a government expedition to Hudson Bay during the winter of 1885-86, he set up a surveying practice in Hamilton, Ont., which he continued to operate until the 1930s.
